Ontario University Championships

Hey everyone, starting tomorrow is the OUA Championships. University of Toronto is hosting (Home court advantage YEAH!). We start play tomorrow, I am seeded first in the women’s doubles with Melissa Hill. I am also seeded first in the mixed doubles with Andrew Wilkinson. I am pretty excited! Singles round robin starts tomorrow morning and mixed doubles at 5:00 (I will be playing then!). The tournament format is pool play, the winners of pool play feed out into the quarter finals and then it is elimination from there.

Hey everyone, here is a preview of an instructional video called “Youth Strength and Conditioning with Marc Lebert and David Kittner”. David Kittner is a Youth Strength and Conditioning coach. We recently met at the Ontario Coaches Conference in Markham. He ran a session on Purposeful Practice. It was really exciting because he was showing stuff that I have been using with my athletes and students and even for my own personal training. It was great to get some confirmation that what me and my athletes have been doing is on par with the sport professionals (which is awesome because I have seen this stuff in action and believe that it’s great training). I have played this game with all levels of Athletes. It is fun and focuses on quick speed reaction time. You can discuss with Athletes about which leg and are the will set up with, what strategies they could use to be quicker, and the differences between their left and right legs. Its fun and sport specific.

Hey Everyone, I don’t know if many of you have heard but BWF spent a lot of time, money and people power creating a great FREE resource called ‘Shuttle Time’. ‘Shuttle Time’ is BWF’s Schools Badminton Program, it is geared towards helping teachers and coaches ‘develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to plan and deliver safe and fun badminton lessons to children and youth’ (BWF Schools Badminton- Shuttle Time, 2012)

The program consist of lesson plans, teachers manuals, and instructional videos (professional, short and to the point). I have already used some of the ideas from some of the instructional videos with the students I coach (they have all worked out great!).

To access these resources you need to sign-up and create a username. It is really easy and all FREE!

I strongly recommend this resource to everyone. There is so much great information here. I haven’t even been able to check it all out yet! Ian Wright and BWF have really impressed me with their work! Enjoy this great resource. Once again it is FREE!

Women’s Doubles Semi-Finals 2011 Canadian Nationals

Hey Everyone, here is some footage from my women’s doubles semi-finals at the 2011 Canadian Senior Nationals. My doubles partner is Val Loker. We lost in three long games to Phyllis Chan and Christin Tsai. It was one of the longest matches I have ever played in my career. It was very painful. We had some very long rallies, but I guess that’s what happens when you put an attacking team (Val and I) vs. a defensive team (Phyllis and Christin). It was a really great, fun game but very physical. My body was dead by the end.

I hope you guys like it!

p.s. Val and I came third and the 2011 Canadian Nationals. We won the 3/4 play-off against Charmaine Reid and Suneeta Khare (21-13, 21-16)
